The Five Pillars of Islam


Islam is based on ‘Five Pillars’. These five pillars are the basic duties of every Muslim.

These five pillars of Islam are:

1.      The Declaration of Faith or Ash-Shahaadah: by saying ‘Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, Muhammadur-Rasoolullaah. Meaning (There is no god worthy of worship but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger).

2.      The Compulsory prayer or Salah: Muslims all around the world pray five times everyday.

3.      The payment of purification of dues or Zakat: All rich Muslims must give zakat to the poor and needy every year.

4.      Fasting in the month of Ramadan or Sawm: All muslims must fast in the month of Ramadan.

5.      Pilgrimage to the Ka’bah or Hajj: All capable muslims must make Hajj at least once in his or her lifetime.

The five pillars of Islam:

1.      Shahaadah
2.      Salah
3.      Zakat
4.      Sawm
5.      Hajj

The five pillars of Islam are the basic duties required of every muslim. These are the foundation of Islam and without them there is no foundation. And, neglecting one will create a shaky foundation which can eventually collapse.
